Get ready to travel to where the spirit of the West meets the heart of the Pacific! The Briscoe Western Art Museum is thrilled to present Aloha Vaqueros, a one-of-a-kind exhibition celebrating the unexpected yet extraordinary connection between Mexican vaqueros from California and Hawaiian paniolos.
In 1832, King Kamehameha III recruited three Mexican vaqueros from San Diego, Alta California, to help control the wild cattle that were wreaking havoc on Hawaii’s native habitat. These skilled horsemen not only managed the growing cattle population but also shared their ranching expertise, shaping the paniolo tradition and blending Mexican and Hawaiian cultures into a lasting cowboy heritage. Aloha Vaqueros brings this incredible legacy to life through art, artifacts, and immersive storytelling that transports you straight to the rolling hills of Hawaii and the open ranges of the American West. Over time, Hawaiian paniolos blended these influences with their own island traditions, creating a culture as vibrant as a Hawaiian sunset. We can’t wait to welcome you to this unforgettable celebration of heritage, adventure, and the enduring cowboy spirit—both here in the West and across the sea.We are deeply grateful to the generous sponsors who made this exhibition and its educational programming possible. Contributions made to the Briscoe bring powerful stories and extraordinary art to life, helping us celebrate the spirit of the West in new and inspiring ways.
